Real-Time Voltage Stability Indicators
NEW LIVES INDEX (NLI)
The NLI is sufficient for timely recognizing long-term voltage instability, based on local voltage/current measurements taken from Extra High Voltage (EHV) transmission buses with the use of PMUs. NLI performs particularly well when placed on the receiving buses of a stressed network corridor feeding a weak area.
RELAY-BASED LIVES INDEX (RLI)

The RLI can be calculated by numerical distance relays protecting transmission lines based on voltage/current measurements taken by the relays from instrument transformers at one of the line ends. Numerical relays have similar sampling capabilities as PMUs, therefore the signal sampling/filtering procedure can be common to that of the NLI implementation.
