Where our work is running

Stability monitoring is only worth anything once it is installed, trusted and used. These are the systems our work is in.

Streaming stability monitoring from live PMU data

The follow-on to our first IPTO project, below. That application read its measurements from files collected once a minute, so the index always ran up to a minute behind the network. This engagement rebuilds it to work on the phasor stream itself: the application connects to the control centre’s phasor data concentrator over IEEE C37.118, receives a fresh set of measurements every 20 ms, and recomputes the New LIVES Index every four seconds.

Operators choose which PMUs to watch and follow the index live alongside IPTO’s other wide-area monitoring displays, with past values kept for incident analysis. The same engagement covers offline voltage stability studies of the Crete interconnection, with and without the new HVDC link in service.

Carried out since 2025 with ICCS, the research institute of the National Technical University of Athens.

yellow warning threshold at 0.5 and the dashed red alarm threshold
                        at 0.2.

Completed

Real-time, PMU-based, long-term voltage stability monitoring

A software tool installed in the control centre of the Hellenic Interconnected System that indicates proximity to long-term voltage instability using synchronised phasor measurements from a sparse set of PMUs. The delivery covered signal sampling and filtering, the computation of the New LIVES Index, and the operator-facing display.

The application’s output has been checked against a real system incident. The work was presented at the Protection, Automation and Control World Conference in Athens in 2024.

The NLI plotted over a five-minute window during a real
system incident. The traces stay near one, well above the
dashed yellow warning threshold at 0.5 and the dotted red
                          alarm threshold at 0.2.

and filtered. The raw conductance oscillates sharply where
                          the filtered trace steps cleanly.

Power system studies with CESI

Since 2024, a running series of study engagements delivered with CESI, the Italian engineering and consultancy group, under a single reference contract. The end clients are transmission operators, utilities and large industrial developments in the Middle East and in Europe.

The work covers the full study cycle: load flow and short-circuit analysis, RMS and EMT dynamic simulation, grid-code compliance assessment, fault ride-through performance, and the development and validation of dynamic models for new plant, including large converter-connected loads.

Why it matters

From a published index to a screen an operator watches

A stability index that only exists in a paper helps nobody at three in the morning. The distance between a validated method and a tool a control-centre engineer will actually rely on is most of the work — filtering real measurements, handling missing data, and presenting a number an operator can act on.

That distance is what these projects cover.
